AOL Mobile Search Incorporates Smart Box Technology

Everyone knows that typing on a mobile phone (even the iPhone!) is a royal pain. So today we're improving the experience by incorporating Smart Box technology into mobile search for the iPhone and iPod Touch to help in faster query completion.

As you type a query into the Smart Box, items containing the words you've already typed will begin to appear. Select the one you want to complete your query.

Voila!: Less typing and better answers faster. But wait...there's more...

We've programmed the Smart Box to include thousands of the most popular queries submitted by all AOL searchers. As you type, the Smart Box will populate the list with related suggestions. You may have thought about searching for 'John McCain.' What you'll see is several more detailed options for a John McCain search such as 'John McCain family pictures.' Or if you're searching for 'Barack Obama' you may also want to take a look at the results for 'Barack Obama Speech.'

By combining the functionality of query auto-complete and related searches all in one place, we've maximized the screen space of the iPhone and hopefully made AOL Mobile Search easier for you to use.

For more on Smart Box, check out our video. Then, try it out and tell us what you think by going to search.aol.com on your iPhone!

Research at the Reference Center

Encyclopedia collections are a thing of the past. Why flip through 20 volumes to find information when there is a wealth of it right at your fingertips? One reason is credibility. When you are looking through a print resource, you know that someone checked the facts before it was published. On the Internet, however, anyone can publish information, no matter how false it is. Just because it rhymes with encyclopedia, it doesn't mean it has the same credentials.

With that being said, there are still plenty of reliable resources on the web. You just have to know where to find them, like on AOL. We recently updated AOL Search Reference Center so it is even easier to use and more informative.

Now with one search, you are connected to the newest dictionary, thesaurus and encyclopedia data sources. AOL Search Reference Center also enhances your research with video results from Truveo. If you are just browsing, check out the "related searches" section for more articles that you might be interested in.

For trustworthy information on the web, search AOL Search Reference Center. Then, come back and tell us how much you like it!

Find Related Stuff -- The Diversity of the Web

Have you ever read something on the web and wondered how other sites cover the same topic? Ever been reading an article on CNN.com and wondered what other news sources have to say about the same issue? Ever been on TMZ reading about the latest embarrassment and wondered what bloggers are writing about it?

The web is all about providing dozens of perspectives about any topic, and new functionality in our toolbars helps to bring you the diversity of the web with just one click.

AOL recently acquired a very cool company called Sphere that tries to give you easy ways to "find related stuff" to whatever you are looking at on the web. Sphere currently powers little widgets on thousands of news and blogging sites, and now that same functionality can be added to any page on the web.

You can also add Sphere functionality to any of our toolbars. Just click the little "plus" sign on your toolbar to access the button gallery. Then select the "Technology and Research" category on the left, and click on the "Sphere" button to add it to your toolbar. Don't have an AOL toolbar yet? What are you waiting for? Download the latest versions of our toolbars and start enjoying the Sphere functionality, which is already built in.

The Sphere tool will open your eyes up to how wide the World Wide Web actually is, and it is easy to use. Once you have a Sphere button on your browser toolbar, go to any website that interests you and click on the "Sphere" button. You will then see a little widget appear on the page that delivers you related content from articles and blogs around the web.

Leave us a comment and let us know how much you enjoy this feature. We think that when you get lots of different opinions about the same subject, you will really understand the subject better. Now go find some related stuff!

AOL Search Gets an "Olympic" Silver

AOL Mobile Search has been awarded a Silver Medal by mocoNews! The mobile search blog held a competition of sorts to see which search engine has the best mobile results for the search term "Olympics." Yahoo! and Google tied for gold and MSN Live came in third place for bronze.

Swimmers Dara Torres and Katie Hoff are jubilant about their silver medals and so are we. OK, so ours wasn't won in Beijing's Water Cube, but it feels great just the same.

The key differentiators according to mocoNews was that Google and Yahoo shows medal results and rankings for the term "Olympics" while AOL doesn't. On the other hand AOL Mobile Search shows Olympic themed ringtones from our partner Thumplay. MocoNews judged our results for basic WAP phones but we're also really proud of our iPhone product (pictured).

We're always looking for ways to improve our search results and are open to suggestions. Let us know what you would like to see.

For It's a Jolly Good Website, Which Nobody Can Deny

DMOZ
, the largest human-edited directory on the Web, celebrated its 10th anniversary this June. The DMOZ directory organizes the ever-expanding Internet for it's growing population of web users. Contributors take the time to sort out the less relevant content that many search engines provide and then organize the valuable listings into categories. Anyone on the planet who has the passion and the willingness to volunteer can choose a topic they care about and join in.

The influence of DMOZ in the search industry is global and far reaching. There are thousands of specialized search engines, such as job seekers and health focused sites, that rely on the organized and focused site listings within DMOZ. Hugely popular community based projects, like Wikipedia, can trace their origin to DMOZ and attribute their large base of participation to it as well. Since it's inception, DMOZ has paved the way for future ideas and has proven that an online community can manage a successful, open project.

This anniversary is not only a celebration for the website, but also for the thousands of faceless editors who deserve recognition. These dedicated editors from across the globe enthusiastically contribute content and maintain the directory's roots. Their benevolence in committing to provide access to information to anyone on the web is commendable. Congrats everyone!

Even after ten years, DMOZ continues to improve. Up next, it plans to make integration of DMOZ data into other resources easier and less reliant on large Raw Data Feeds (RDF). For example, you could use DMOZ to find a list of sites specific to your interest, such as barbecuing. You can then add those sites to your own informational site or use them to make a widget for your blog. For more on the anniversary and what DMOZ is planning next, see the managing editor's note on the DMOZ blog.

Here's a toast to ten great years and hopefully many more: Happy Birthday DMOZ!
